ANSO – ASSOCIATION OF NORDIC LGBT STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS
Pressrelease 7 November 2006
New hope for human rights on the Faroe Islands.
Today, the debate on the proposal to prohibit discrimination because of sexual orientation, will be reopened in the Faroese parliament. It is the third time that the topic is up for discussion in the Føroya Løgting. The proposal was first up for a discussion in 1988, when only 1 parliamentarian voted for the proposal and then again last December where 12 voted for but 20 against.
- The Faroe Islands are the only Nordic country still not legally recognizing LGBT people in any way. We strongly encourage the Faroese parliamentarians to vote in favor of protecting LGBT persons, it is a matter of basic human rights, says Ásta Ósk Hlöðversdóttir, president of ANSO.
Recent incidents reported on the Faroe Islands have included a number of violent attacks on openly gay persons, and last week’s debate in the Nordic Council also addressed the topic. The Faroe Islands representative, the Minister of Culture and Education, Jógvan á Lakjuni, is an outspoken opponent of the proposed legislation. In August 2005, when ANSO held a conference on the Faroe Islands, which also included the first Pride Parade in the history of the Faroes, he said he found it outrageous that his fellow minister, Hans Pauli Strøm, was opening a gay conference, and that it would degenerate the faroese nation if its government started accepting homosexual lifestyle as something natural.
- A lot of faroese LGBT people feel that they need to flee the country because of their sexual orientation – this should be unacceptable for the Faroese Parliament and the faroese people. Passing the law to ban discrimination because of sexual orientation is a step in the right direction, says Tina K. Jakobsen, boardmember of ANSO and faroese Friðarbogin.
