Finland finally gets an official taste of spring with First of May (vappu) celebrations on 30 April and 1 May. Apart from spring, this traditional festival is dedicated to labour and students – and the good people of Homoglobiini will naturally be organizing events for all of our members.

On Monday, 30.4. we’ll be warming up for vappu at 3 pm onwards at Turku Seta’s office, Rauhankatu 1 c B 22, where HG offers snakcs, punch, and atmosphere. By 6 pm, we’ll be heading to nearby Puolalanmäki Hill with other student organizations to don our white student caps. This achieved, we’ll be marching in a procession with other students to the other side of the river where the statue of Lilja also gets a cap to crown her noble head and wavy granite hair. The official academic programme concludes with this event, and then we’ll return to Turku Seta’s office to continue the party.

On May Day we’ve been invited on a picnic with all other LGBTQ organizations in Turku by Turku Seta. This picnic takes place on Vartiovuori Hill, where numerous other student organizations hold their picnics. HG will offer all members some snacks and drinks. Picnic starts at 12 o’clock.

If you can’t find our group (there will most likely be a LOT of people), you can call or SMS HG’s president Juha (040-8387896).

It’s time to explore culture! HG is going to see a play based on the movie Fucking Åmål in the Kaarina Youth Theatre. The story is about two teen girls living in a small town and how their worlds and feelings collide. The play will be in Finnish and it will last about two hours. You will only have to pay 11 euros for the ticket, when you go with HG. There are places for the fifteen first to sign in. Send an email to meri.tee(at)hotmail.com and book your ticket before 17.4. HG’s next member meeting is at bar Proffan kellari (Rehtorinpellonkatu) on Wednesday, 11th April from 8 pm onwards. Feel free to come and sip a pint with us, chat, perhaps test your skills at various board games and generally have a good time. Welcome!

Rabbit season? Duck season? Nope, gay season! In our next meeting we’ll have virtual shooting at Megazone (Julia, Eerikinkatu 4, basement level). The game begins at 19.30, so we’re meeting at 19.15. outside Megazone. Contrary to previous, erroneous information, the event is regrettably NOT free of charge, but costs 5 e per person instead (normal fare is 8 e). Old veteran reminds that you should wear dark clothes in order not to shine in the uv lights. Aftermath is at bar Suxes from ca 20 onwards.

Homoglobiini’s annual general meeting will be held on Monday, March 19 at 7 pm at Turku Seta’s office (Rauhankatu 1 c B 22). The meeting will go through last year’s accounts and grant liability discharge for 2011’s board members. All members are welcome to the meeting.

Come and see the breathtaking spectacle that is Homoglobiini on Ice in a heartwarming rousette skating event on Monday 27 February at 6-8 pm at Parkki skating rink (Tuureporinkatu 2, near the bus station, behind the concert hall, http://www.eniro.fi/s/LHo)! Other local queer organizations are involved and invited to the event, so this is a chance to make the best of winter and meet new people at once. TuSeta offers hot cocoa and scones/cookies for skaters. Use of the rink costs 1 e per person and must be paid with a 1 e coin (the machine accepts no other). Those who don’t own a pair of skates need not despair: skates can be rented at the rink at a price of 4 euros. You don’t have to be a master skater to attend and have fun. Welcome!
